How to pay income tax online

With the growing taxpayers in India and with the growth of young generation filing income tax returns religiously with DIY method, it is a constant question in young taxpayers that 

                                                       How To Pay Income Tax?

Basically in India, income tax needs to be filed compulsorily through an online way. However the income tax payment can be paid in any of the following two methods:

  1. Physical Bank Challan
  2. Online Way (Debit Card or Net Banking)

Steps to do Income Tax Payment through physical bank challan:

  1. Download Correct Income Tax Challan (280/281 for individuals ) from income tax official website in pdf format and print the same in black & white.
  2. Fill the form correctly, with your personal details 
  3. Xerox the filled form for office copy OR  acknowledgement.
  4. Then visit the nearest branch of any one below authorized banks by NSDL :
  • Axis Bank
  • Bank of Baroda
  •  Bank of India
  • Bank of Maharashtra
  • Canara Bank
  • Central Bank of India
  • Dena Bank
  • HDFC Bank
  • ICICI Bank
  • IDBI Bank
  • Indian Bank
  • Indian Overseas Bank
  • Jammu & Kashmir Bank
  • Punjab and Sind Bank
  • Punjab National Bank
  • State Bank of India
  • UCO Bank
  • Union Bank of India
  • Vijaya Bank

Provide them the challan and cheque in the name of “TO INCOME TAX ACCOUNT – NAME” Replace word name with the taxpayers name written in tax challan with you. Banker will give you a acknowledgment of paid challan once he checks everything. Now after 3 to 4 working days , you need to again visit the branch and take an acknowledgement of challan having valid challan no on it. This challan no you need to use it in your income tax return.

Steps to do Income Tax Payment in Online Way:

  1. Visit official NSDL site for tax payment.
  2. Now you need to select the challan number depending upon for which reason you are paying tax.
  3. Challan No / ITNS 280 if you are paying advance tax or self assessment tax.
  4. Challan No / ITNS 281 if you are paying TDS/TCS for the year


5. If you are paying self assessment tax or advance tax through Challan No 280. Then you need to enter following details in the challan

  1. Tax Applicable ( Select Income Tax -0021 )
  2. Type Of Payment ( Advance Tax Or Self Assessment Tax)
  3. Mode Of Payment ( Net Banking or Debit Card)
  4. Select Bank Name
  5. Select PAN No ( Be Careful Here and Double Check Your PAN )
  6. Select Assessment Year
  7. Then Type Your Full Address , Contact Details
  8. Captcha Code


iv. Once you proceed the system auto generates your name as per PAN and tells you to confirm the same.

Here you need to check whole form once and everything found correct then tick the box and CLICK SUBMIT TO BANK


v. Then you would be logged into your banks netbanking where you should enter your credentials and pay the same.

vi. Post successful payment a Acknowledgment Challan would be generated having a Challan no. which can be used in ITR Filing

How To Pay Advance Tax Online :

  1. Advance tax can be easily paid following the above steps. However I have written short steps below too:
  2. Visit https://onlineservices.tin.egov-nsdl.com/etaxnew/tdsnontds.jsp
  3. Select Challan No 280
  4. Fill all personal details including PAN and Assessment Year & click submit
  5. Then check all details at confirmation page and select proceed to netbanking
  6. At netbanking page fill all details and pay the challan by inserting correct amounts in tax, interest, penalty and fee tab
  7. On successful payment download challan with challan no and use it in ITR Filing

Things To Check While Paying Income Tax :

Always select the correct challan number while paying income tax. Challan No 280 Or Challan No 281.
Always use correct PAN Number of taxpayer and correct Assessment Year
Always try to use netbanking rather than debit card as it is more safe and secure
Do not refresh or backspace screen in whole process as it will lead to blank form
Last but not least always double check the link from which you are paying income tax, only use the official NSDL Link.

FAQ for Income Tax Payment :

  1.Can we use a credit card for income tax payment?
                  No, we cannot use credit cards for income tax payments. Only debit cards and net banking are allowed.
   2.Which tax payment to choose advance tax or self assessment tax?
                 Advance tax challan is to be used if tax for the current financial year is paid before 31st March of that financial year.
                  Self Assessment challan is to be used if tax for previous financial year is paid after 31st March of that financial year.
     3.In whose name should the cheque be written if we are paying tax through a bank challan
               Generally cheque should be in the name of INCOME TAX ACCOUNT – NAME OF TAXPAYER. The cheque should be crossed and of the same date                    of challan. However one should reconfirm the same with bank officials too.
